Troubleshooting wire breaks: the problem may not be where a break occurs

Misalignment is one of the biggest problems that exists in drawing of copper wire and other metals and alloys, and one of the worst places is the rod breakdown machines.

One reason for that is there are very, very few wire breaks in the rod breakdown machine, so the mentality is, “Forget it, it must be okay.”
You tend to get wire breaks in secondary machines, but a lot of the problems that are created downstream are actually caused by misalignment in the rod breakdown machine. Looking at what what’s taking place in a wiredrawing machine when it’s not running doesn’t mean a darn thing because things move while it’s running. Doing a carbide die alignment test in the rod breakdown machine may save you a lot of downstream grief.
