Taihan Cable & Solution (Taihan) reported winning a contract from Germany’s TenneT and another for the Yeonggwang Nakwol offshore wind farm in South Korea.

A press release said that Taihan won a contract from Germany’s TenneT to supply it EHV power cable in a deal worth about US$45 million. The project calls for 380kV underground cables that will be used to expand the transmission network for power generation. Taihan will supply the EHV cables and cable accessories, and be responsible for the power network design, cable laying, connection and testing. Taihan previously won two projects in Germany’s HV cable market worth US$52.4 million.

Taihan also reported that it has won a contract worth approximately $75 million to supply subsea cables for the 365 MW Yeonggwang Nakwol offshore wind farm in South Korea. Per multiple media reports, the order is for inter-array subsea cables that will connect 64 offshore wind turbines installed at the wind farm, and the cables connecting them with a new substation on Songi Island.

The cables will be made at Taihan’s Dangjin plant. Last October, the company was a preferred subsea cables supplier for the 532 MW Anma offshore wind project.

“With the Yeonggwang Nakwol project, we will contribute to the stabilization of the subsea cable supply chain by actively participating in various offshore wind power projects being advanced in Korea, and increase export competitiveness by using it as a stepping stone for expansion into the growing offshore wind power market in Europe and the United States,” Taihan said.

NKT has been awarded its largest order, worth more than €1 billion, from TenneT and TransnetBW, for a project that calls for it to supply and install a 525 kV XLPE high-voltage DC (direct current) onshore cable system.

A press release said that the cable will be used for Germany’s SuedLink corridor, which comprises two power cable systems. NKT has been awarded the 2 GW cable link, which it noted will be the world’s largest and longest high-voltage DC underground interconnector. The SuedLink line starts in Northern Germany where it connects to power from offshore wind farms and to the Nordlink interconnector, which brings hydro power from Norway to Germany via a 525 kV high-voltage DC offshore power cable system also provided by NKT.

Earlier this year, NKT announced that it would deliver the majority of the 525 kV XLPE power cable system for the SuedOstLink corridor in Eastern Germany.

“The order for the SuedLink corridor project underlines NKT’s position as a major partner in Germany’s transition towards increased use of renewable energy and in connecting the national grids,” said NKT President and CEO Alexander Kara.

Italy’s Prysmian Group reports that it has been awarded a major grid connection project, DolWin5, worth some €140 million, from Dutch-German grid operator TenneT.

A press release said that the TenneT project will connect multiple offshore wind farms to the German grid. It calls for “the supply, installation and commissioning of a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) 320 kV XLPE-insulated submarine and land power cable connection, with a transmission capacity of 900 MW, as well as the associated fibre optic cable system, comprising a land route of 30 km and a subsea route of 100 km.” The turnkey connections will link the offshore converter platform DolWin epsilon, located some 100 km offshore in the German North Sea, to the mainland Emden/Ost converter station, and help transmit the generated renewable energy into the German grid.

The cables will be manufactured at Prysmian Group’s plants in Pikkala, Finland, submarine, and Gron, France, land, the release said. Offshore installation activities will be performed by two Prysmian cable-laying vessels: the Cable Enterprise, for deep water installation, and the Ulisse, for shallow water activities. Completion of the project is scheduled for the middle of 2024.

“The Dolwin5 project continues our valued long relationship with the major TSO TenneT and demonstrates our ability to provide tailor-made submarine cable solutions for challenging projects, providing the offshore infrastructure needed to support the growth of clean energy in Northern Europe,” said Hakan Ozmen, EVP Projects, Prysmian Group.

The release said that the project comes “at a very important time for Prysmian,” which recently won a €200 million U.S. offshore project from Vineyard Wind, LLC.
