The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

IAC

Designation for Interlocked armor cable.

IACS

Designation for International Annealed Copper Standard, units of mass and volume resistivity at 20°C for annealed copper as determined by the International Electrotechnical Commission. These values are used to compare the current values of copper, and are expressed as a percentage, referred to as % IACS.

IBP

Designation for Initial Boiling Point.

ICEA-P46-426

Designation for power cable with copper and aluminum conductors.

ICEA-S19-81

Designation for rubber-insulated wire and cable.

ICEA-S61-402

Designation for thermoplastic-insulated wire and cable.

ICEA-S66-524

Designation for cross-linked thermosetting polyethylene insulated wire and cable.

ICEA-S86-516

Designation for ethylene propylene rubber insulated wire and cable.

ID

Designation for internal or inside diameter of a hollow cylindrical object, as opposed to its OD (outside diameter).

IDC

Designation for insulation displacement connector.

Identified

Marked to be recognized as grounded.

Idler

A sheave or roller used to guide or support rope or wire.

Ignition Cable

Cable designed primarily for automotive ignition systems.

IIR

Designation for Isobutylene Isoprene Rubber, which is butyl synthetic rubber.

IMC

Designation for Intermediate Metal Conduit.

Immersion Coating

Coating a metal with a second metal by immersing the former in a solution containing ions of the latter.

Impact Bar Specimen

A test specimen of specified dimensions that is used to determine the relative resistance of a metal or a plastic to fracture by shock.

Impact Energy

The energy absorbed in the impact test. (See impact test.)

Impact Extrusion

A cold forming process, usually at ambient temperature, in which the metal is forced to flow by impact of a punch. The flow could be either around the punch, called backward extrusion, forming a tube with a solid bottom, or through another opening.

Impact Strength

The energy absorbed in the impact test. (See impact test.)
