Need a formula for strand to solid diameters was created by Archived Forum Admin
Is there a formula to convert what a 1500mm2 stranded copper cable would be into an equivalent solid diameter? Or something approximately close?

Hi there Bill,

- Determine the area of one strand after accurately measuring the strand diameter. (They all have the same diameter in this case.)
- Multiply the strand area by the total number of strands to get the area of the conductor you have now.
- Determine the diameter of the solid, round equivalent conductor by working backwards from that combined area.

Go here www.stewart-hay.com/pshwire.htm if you wish to cross check the gauge size of the equivalent solid conductor. (It should be the same gauge size.)

The only difference is that the solid equivalent conductor will have a smaller outside diameter. That is the price that is paid for flexibility.

Other conversions are also on that page.
