The extrusion process covers a lot of different products; wire, film, sheet, cable, parts, etc. Back end concept is about the same. The front end or outlet end can be different.

Hello,
I am assuming you are referring to plastic extrusion and not metal extrusion.
In addition to what Spectre07 recommended, I suggest that you visit your nearest university engineering library.
Over the decades there have been some really great books (For an engineer!) on the theory of plastic extrusion but be forewarned that when you actually get inside the extruder mathematically, you start with solids materials conveying and end up with a few fairly large, interrelated, partial differential equations in fluid mechanics. When I was at university, I really enjoyed fluid mechanics and thermodynamics so I did my engineering undergraduate thesis on the fluid mechanics inside a plastic extruder. Great fun.

Hello again Richard,
A thesis generally isn't a problem solving exercise but rather one of derivations and tying equations together.
I did however have full access to an IBM 360 main frame which occupied about 10,000 square feet along with an IBM 1620 so I did have all the computer power I needed but it wasn't required for my theses.
I sure would have liked a modern laptop in some of those senior labs though.
