Zinc Wire Manufacturing Technical Publications was created by Mr Bhavani Prasad
Hi,
Is there any technical publication specifically dealing with manufacturing of pure Zinc wire for Thermal Spraying?
If not, then manufacture of which metal wire is closest to manufacture of Zinc wire in terms of manufacturing process, equipment used, metallurgical properties and lubricants used Etc?
Also, where can I find metallurgical properties of PURE Zinc?
Specifically with respect to annealing temperatures, times, cooling times, recrystallization range, ductility, work hardening Etc.
Thanks for any clues or other helpful information.

Hello,
Here are the properties of zinc from the International Zinc Organization www.zinc.org
www.zinc.org/basics/zinc_properties More data can be found at the American Galvanizers Association www.galvanizeit.org/designing-fabricatin...nc-metal-properties/ Finally, specialized zinc information may be found at ASM International (Formerly the American Society for Metals) www.asminternational.org/portal/site/www/ but there will be cost, perhaps substantial, involved.
ASTM International (Formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials) global.ihs.com/standards.cfm?publisher=A...7MwLgCFWJlMgoddHAAnQ has a number of specifications for the thermal spraying of zinc. Just type in Thermal Spraying Zinc in the Title/ Keyword box in the Standards Search line at the top of the page and click the Search button. Then purchase the specifications you require.

Hello Mr Stewart-Hay,
Thanks a lot for taking time to answer my question in detail.
It looks like only ASM International might have additional details about metallurgical and mechanical properties of Zinc, but you are right. Their prices are substantial! I will spend more time on their website to figure out if there is anything specific to match my needs.
I also spent quite a bit of time doing deep intensive searches on Google but could not gather any specific information related to "manufacturing zinc wire." (but there is more than enough detail to manufacture different types of ferrous wires as well as some other non ferrous wires like Copper etc.)
Do you know if The Non Ferrous Wire Handbook (Volume 1,2 or 3) contains any specific details about the manufacturing process for PURE Zinc wire? If so approximately how many pages cover Zinc wire manufacturing.
It would be great if one could see the table of contents of that book (ala Amazon.com peek inside! feature). I am specifically looking for practical, usable information I can potentially use to optimize our Zinc wire manufacturing process.
Secondly what is the main difference between the different editions of the book? It looks to me that Volume 3 is an upgrade of Volume 2 but both are still offered for sale.
Thanks for any further tips, clues or hints Mr. Stewart-Hay or any other wise WAI forum member.

Hello again,
The Nonferrous Wire Handbook, Volume 1 is all about the manufacture of wire rod. On page 127 there are two lines of print indicating that that there are Properzi machines casting zinc rod. It goes on to state that after casting, the rod can be rolled in line to below 0.300 inches (7.62 mm). That's it!
The Nonferrous Wire Handbook, Volumes 2 and 3 have no reference for zinc in their indexes.
Nonferrous Wire Handbook, Volume 3 is indeed an updated version of the Nonferrous Wire Handbook, Volume 2 but there is some older process information in the Nonferrous Wire Handbook, Volume 2 that is still appropriate to some plants.
Similarly the Electrical Wire Handbook and the Electrical Wire Handbook, Part 2 have no references to zinc in their indexes. That is why I previously provided no zinc technical references in this regard.
As far as placing the various indexes on the web site, please be advised that I am a volunteer (retired) and I have no control of what is placed on the WAI website. I am sure however that your suggestion has been seen and perhaps noted for discussion by the appropriate WAI International employees.

Hello Mr Stewart-Hay,
Thanks for the detailed description of each of the 3 non ferrous wire drawing books.
I appreciate your taking time to check indexes of all 5 books for Zinc wire references. I was hoping there would be some coverage in the wire drawing books.
Oh well! It looks like I will have to look for other Pure Zinc metal forming operations (such as rolling, forging, tube drawing etc.) for help. More than likely all such operations will also have to depend on metallurgical properties of Zinc. Would ASM International be the best source of reference for this information also, or are you aware of any other sources?
Are you aware of any other metal wire or zinc alloy wire which is closest to Zinc wire in manufacturing?
Thanks again Mr. Stewart-Hay,
Prasad

Hello again,
I am sorry but I have no experience drawing zinc. I imagine your best bet as far as other metals and alloys are concerned is to look at the tensile strength and the elongation for similarities.
I would imagine that ASM International is your best bet re zinc and its alloys. Why don't you contact them to see if they have all of the information you are looking for, including various zinc alloys.. Then buy the appropriate book. The information will be a key part of your Company's technical library for many years to come.. www.asminternational.org/portal/site/www/
There is really nothing else I can do to assist you.
Cheers.
