The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Double-Enameled Wire

Term for the grade of enameled wire referred to as “thick covering” or “heavy build.”

Double-Faced Tape

Fabric tape finished on both sides with a rubber or synthetic compound.

Double-Galvanized Wire

An alternative name for heavy galvanized wire.

Double-Layer Flat Coil

A coil in the form of two flat spirally wound layers (applied particularly to copper water tube or refrigerator tube). Also called Double Layer Pancake Coil or Double Layer Spirally Wound Coil.

DPC

Designation for Double Paper Covered.

DPN

Designation for diamond pyramid hardness number. See Diamond Pyramid Hardness Test.

DPR

Designation for double lapping of pure rubber. Also abbreviated to “DIR.”

DR

Designation for rubber range and dryer cord (CSA).

Draft

The amount by which a piece of metal being rolled or drawn is reduced in section is called the reduction or “draft.” The amount of reduction by drawing expressed as a percentage representing the difference in cross-sectional area before and after drawing.

Drafting

The reduction-per-pass in a multiple die machine. To take advantage of annealed or soft supply rod or wire, the first several dies take a larger reduction than the downstream balance of the dies. This is also called tapered drafting. The subsequent drafts are usually of equal amounts of reduction. This is called straight drafting.

Drag Coefficient

The amount of force required to drag a large portable cable; normally 50 percent of the total weight of the cable.

Drain Wires

A number of small gauge bare wires applied concentrically about the insulation shield of a high voltage cable for the purpose of a fault current return path. They also provide a means of terminating laminated shields.

Draw Down Ratio

The ratio of the cross-sectional area through which resin is extruded to the cross-sectional area of the finished coating.

Draw Feed Stock

Rod or wire that is subsequently drawn to a smaller size. Sometimes referred to as “half-product.”

Draw Marks

The longitudinal marks left by a wiredrawing die. See Scoring and Die Line.

Draw-Pak

Once widely used, this equipment enables wire to be fed directly into dispatch containers of the payoff pak type (the containers are rotated). The Draw-Pak can either be an integral part of a wiredrawing machine, thus providing a continuous wiredrawing and packaging machine, or it can be in the form of a continuous wire packaging attachment for conversion of existing wiredrawing machines, processing equipment or coating frames. It is still in use but has largely been replaced by in-line core and spooling equipment.

Drawability

A measure of the workability of a metal subject to a drawing process, referencing its metallurgical characteristics for the finished product required.

Drawbench

A bench of any length having at one end a die stand and provision for pulling the material through the die straight up the bench by means of a chain.

Drawing

See Wiredrawing.

Drawing Compound

A substance (lubricant) applied to prevent pickup and scoring during drawing or pressing operations by preventing metal-to-metal contact of the work and die.
