The Book of Terms

The Book of TermsThe WJI Book of Wire & Cable Terms: an interactive experience of learning and sharing
This book, written by industry volunteers and containing more than 5,000 entries, is an asset for newcomers to wire and cable.

At the same time, it also represents an opportunity for industry veterans to give back by either updating or adding to the more than 5,000 entries. This is an honor system process. Entries/updates must be non-commercial, and any deemed not to be so will be removed. Share your expertise as part of this legacy project to help those who will follow. Purchase a printed copy here.

Spring, Initial Tension

The force that tends to keep the coils of an extension spring closed and which must be overcome before the coils start to open.

Spring, Mean Coil Diameter

The outside spring diameter (OD) minus one wire diameter.

Spring, Presetting

When a compression spring has been coiled from a spring wire it is preset, cold or hot, coil-to-coil or to a defined length corresponding to a specified torsion stress in the wire. This is done to introduce a new stress situation in the wire, improving the spring load at a specified depression. The presetting also makes the spring “stand” better and reduces the loss of load over time. The process is also known as “scragging.”

Sprinkler Control Cable

A direct buried assembly of 2 to 13 small conductors with an overall jacket used for low voltage (maximum 30 volts) control circuits.

SPST

Designation for Single Pole Single Throw switching action.

SPT-1

Designation for conductor like SP-1, except all thermoplastic. 300V, 60°C to 105°C (140°F to 221°F). With or without a third conductor for grounding.

SPT-2

Designation for conductor like SP-2, except all thermoplastic 300V, 60°C to 105°C (140°F to 221°F). With or without a third conductor for grounding.

SPT-3

Designation for conductor like SP-3, except all thermoplastic 300V, 60°C to 105°C (140°F to 221°F). With or without a third conductor or grounding.

Spurious Response

Any response of an electric transducer or device.

Square Pass

A copper mill pass that uses a square profile followed by a round profile.

SR

Designation for silicone rubber control cable 600V, 125°C (257°F).

SR-AW

Designation for flexible, nickel-plated copper conductor, silicone rubber insulation, glass braid, 600V, 200°C (392°F).

SR-H

Designation for silicone rubber insulated, asbestos braid, 500V, 125°C (257°F).

SRD

Designation for portable range or dryer cable. Three or four rubber-insulated conductors with rubber or neoprene jacket, flat or round construction. 300V, 60°C (140°F).

SRDT

Designation for conductor like SRD, but all thermoplastic with a maximum temperature of 90°C (194°F).

SRHV

Designation for 2,500 volt insulated hookup wire, JAN-C-76.

SRRF

Designation for 1000-volt radio frequency wire, polyethylene, glass braid, JAN-C-76.

SSC

Designation for Single Silk Covered.

SSR

Designation for Solid State Relay.

ST

Designation for conductor like Type S except all-plastic construction. 600V, 60°C to 105°C (140°F to 221°F)
